GIS, or Geographic Information Systems, is a tool that is used by virtually every City department. GIS combines multiple geographical ‘layers’ of information to enable people to make informed decisions about that area. Different ‘layers’ can be combined to suit specific needs or interests.
The department's primary focus is on infrastructure assets, which includes fire hydrants, water valves, water lines, waste water manholes and lines, street signs and other utility features maintained by the City. To accurately map these and other features, City staff utilize mapping grade GPS (Global Positioning System) equipment, which enables personnel to efficiently find assets in the field and create reliable and current maps. Once the data is collected, GIS staff manipulate it with ESRI’s Arc Info and ArcView and AutoDesk’s AutoCAD software.
While the City does not maintain a property parcel map, that information is available for viewing purposes. The City also collects data on zoning areas, parks and Open Space, trails, historic buildings and districts, snow plow and street sweeping routes and City boundaries.
