Karen's Council Comments…..February 2008…Reflecting on Change
Webster has lengthy definitions for 'change'……among them is 'becoming different'. Every two years, after an election, Council changes and regroups with new faces. Marjorie Sloan is a new face on Council, but a well –recognized face in Golden from her history of serving on various boards and commissions. Marjorie's recent position as Chair of the Planning Commission, as well as past experience with GURA, and her profession as an attorney, has already shown her to be a great asset to Council. She will bring forward a fresh view of land use issues, as well as providing another legal brain for Council. I am happy to welcome this change!
Marjorie happens to be the ONLY new face until we have a special election on April 22 to fill the Ward 4 vacancy that was created when Jacob Smith was elected Mayor. Jacob's new role as Mayor is yet another change for Council, with differences noted in leadership style. Changes on Council are mainly a 'hop on the train and go' as the City's needs and wants and issues don't stop with changes on Council. Being prepared to step into the position is key to continuity of our work….setting policy and giving direction.
Change in the seasons is another anticipated event. Everyone is looking forward to spring, and bemoaning the snow this winter. Is there really more snow, cold, winter, wind, and clouds than in years past? I recall last winter as having MAJOR snows, but this year has seemed like a long one of many little snowfalls. Remember……shovel your walks within 24 hours of the snow stopping! If you wait too long to clear it off, it becomes that impossible iceberg that won't budge. If you are physically able to do so, offer to help out a neighbor with their snow removal. If you need help, contact the Community Center and put your name on a list to help with shoveling for those who can't. Another month will bring up the tulips!
In January, Mayor Smith outlined the 2008 Priorities for Council. This month Council is tasked with selecting members for the Sustainability Advisory Board. The vast number of highly motivated and educated applicants has been a challenge for us. We will be interviewing and selecting the Board members by month's end, and they will then be working on Council's 10 year goals for Sustainability. Stay tuned!
I wish to thank Mayor Smith and my fellow Councilors for appointing me as Mayor Pro-Tem. It is an honor to serve, and I hope to assist Jacob in the myriad of duties that come along. Each Councilor brings ideas and vision to the TEAM. We are all committed to Golden, and want to hear from you, our citizens. You can contact all of us at citycouncil@cityofgolden.net
